While living in Toronto, Annie and her partner started to think about having a baby. Annie started being more conscious of the ingredients she was putting on her skin.
She tried upmarket botanical skincare and loved that it was better for her skin and made her look forward to her skincare routine, but found the prices to be steep for every-day use.
After researching the ingredients for these creams, Annie began experimenting with making her own formulas. She found she really enjoyed the results she got from using natural-but-luxurious, nourishing botanical oils. After some time, she preferred her own formulas to the expensive ones she had used.
After much consideration the decision was made to move back to Aotearoa from overseas to have their baby. Annie continued her research and learned about the benefits of native ingredients like Kawakawa and Harekeke (flax seed). She started using them in her formulas.
Wanting to share her, skin-nourishing, plant-based formulas with the world, Annie created a company. She named her brand "Kia tau", which means to be calm in Maori. She hopes her products can help people carve out quiet moments in their busy lives to reconnect with their bodies and their senses.
